Last Saturday I purchased a set of kitchen cabinets (that will need some repair), a sink and a kitchen faucet. The NIB, undamaged sink was 5% of the Home Depot price. The open box faucet normally sells for $88 and was $10. The cabinets came out to about $140 for 7 usable pieces (about the price for 1 at HD). Now you can understand why I drove 160 miles, round trip. With 2 complete bathrooms and part of my kitchen still to go, I expect to be making a few more trips to The Depot this spring and summer.
The Depot is a small storefront retailer of home improvement items located in the heart of downtown Greensburg. They deal, primarily, in open box, store returns and close-out items sourced from Home Depot. The majority of their offerings are kitchen and bath products such as vanities, sinks, medicine cabinets, mirrors, toilets, shower and bath items. Occasionally they will get related items like doors, lighting, heaters, water filters and things like that. The owners are a young couple who have been doing this for over 5 years. Despite a lack advertising or a fancy showroom, people travel hundreds of miles to buy things here for their home improvement and remodeling needs. Hours are limited to Saturday morning and early afternoon or by appointment on other days. Every Saturday morning a tractor/trailer load of new product arrives and disappears a few hours later. Why? It's the pricing and service. Word of mouth and repeat customers make thousands of dollars of slightly damaged or discontinued bathroom vanities, tub enclosures and bath fixtures find their way into the back of pick-ups, SUVs and mini vans every Saturday. Prices start at about 50% off of the current or last Home Depot price but you could easily find yourself paying only 5 or 10% for less popular or mildly imperfect pieces.The Depot isn't like other sellers who try and make the maximum profit on each item. They have limited space and a nearly unlimited supply of product coming so amazing deals are the norm. Move it in, move it out, make people happy. That's how it works, a way of doing business that I like.
